Music example analysis!

To look at some inspiration for my upcoming music video creation project so naturally, getting ideas from previous students seemed like the best idea, seeing what would actually be possible within our time frame and with minimal production value.

This music video is amazing, it's got thorough themes and motifs throughout the entire video and unlike most modern music videos from pop stars, it makes sense and there is a constant story throughout, even ending with a rounded cyclical structure.

Going into more detail with Andrew Goodwin's music video theory, I can analyse this much further! This video shows a clear artistic style with the singer being overlaid over background scenery, especially starting with the war themes and imagery dotted in the video such as the war graves, archived footage with finally steady old televisions showing black and white images dropped in open spaces which I simply love which is a perfect example of reoccurring voyeurism. As the screens are showing propaganda, it makes a clear contextual reference to World War Two as it is literally shown explicitly on screen, so I don't know how much further I can delve into it.

There are plenty of shots of the main singer in different poses, making various hand gestures and singing with differing amounts of strength and aggression. The majority of the shots of the artists are from a side on view but they were all in black in white to fit with the black and white television theme, all in a black background to further connect the 'bleakness' vibe set from the beginning.

'I pray for some things to change, your mother is a murderer!' Being shouted and screamed as the lyrics whilst there is a visual of a puppet near a tree then of a silhouette of that same puppet with a noose around its neck, showing a very strong connection with the lyrics as both the audio and imagery is illustrating themes of death. The puppet is also shown throughout along with the television screens which gives the music video a clear directorial direction and style.

  1. I like that you have used Andrew Goodwin's theories in your analysis, well done.
You have spotted the voyeurism and intertextual references, however I would like more detail on genre and conventions used. Describe the impact of the visual motifs.
